Irvine home owners are celebrating the accomplishment of their home town Pony 13 All-Star baseball team that won the Pony 13 World Series championship last month. Coach Wally Wong has coached Irvine Pony Baseball for 22 years, and says he knew that he had something special with this year’s team.

Prior to competing in the Pony 13 World Series, the team was entered in two simultaneous tournaments in Mission Viejo and Placentia. The team prevailed in both tournaments, and Wong said he knew they team could make a run for the World Series title. Wong coached all four of his sons until the youngest of the four played his final season in the league five years ago, but because of his love of the game, he decided to continue coaching.

In the final game of the World Series, Wong’s team collected a 17-6 mercy-rule win over the Miami (Tamiami), Florida team at Amerige Park in Fullerton. Adds Wong, “It’s a huge accomplishment. It’s pretty amazing. I’ve been coaching 22 years and we’ve never come this close. It’s still hard to imagine. No team in Irvine ever has won for (ages) 9 and above and in Orange County I think we’re the only team to win outside of Huntington Beach [Ocean View Little League in 2011].”

Many Irvine home owners cheered on the team as they made their way through the regional playoffs, the super regionals, and finally, the zone playoffs. Now, with a World Series title under his belt, Wong says he isn’t sure if he will return to coach next year.
