Upon hearing about Irvine’s Mid-Autumn Festival, coinciding with the Harvest full moon, and second in significance only to the Lunar New Year, in which Asian families, (Chinese and Vietnamese families, in particular here in Irvine) share a sweet delicacy called “mooncakes”, we decided that these tasty treats would be a perfect gift for an Irvine client of ours to enjoy during their family festivities.

Now its was on to find the best bakery for mooncakes in Irvine. We found an article from the L.A. Weekly entitled “Where to Get Mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival” by Jim Thurman.”

“Traditionally, mooncakes are round or square pastries with a dense filling of lotus seed paste and a salted duck egg that represents the moon, though a wide variety of fillings and regional styles have evolved over the centuries. These days, you can find savory, low fat, low sugar, vegetarian and even vegan options.”

After researching both the groceries and bakeries that carry the mooncake delicacies for the mid-Autumn Festival, we decided that the Taiwanese chain 85 C Bakery Cafe in Irvine would offer the best mooncake varieties from which to choose as mentioned in Jim Thurman’s article. Now it was on to the 85 C Bakery in Irvine.

It was serendipitous that Ahn Do, a Los Angeles Times reporter, was inside the 85 C

Bakery covering the mid-Autumn Festival story, and interviewed  “the man in the Levi’s, loafers and fedora,” Eric’s signature style he’s known for in and around the Irvine community, as well as other Irvine shoppers.

Below you can find the entire article about these tasty mooncakes–“a beloved seasonal dish in the Chinese and Vietnamese communities”, entitled “The Time of Year to Swoon Over Mooncakes” by Anh Do.
